School Cancellation Procedures, Snow Days and Other Important Protocols

Dearborn Schools will call a snow day when there is substantial concern about snow or ice making it unsafe to get to or from schools. This decision is typically made after talking to a meteorologist and consulting with other area superintendents. When it is feasible, the district will try to make snow day announcements the evening before, but parents should have plans in place for a morning call if conditions change overnight.

For cold weather, Dearborn Schools will consider closing schools when the wind chill temperatures are expected to be -20°F.  For elementary recess, if the windchill is below +20°F, recess will be held indoors. This is a guideline and principals may use their discretion on cancelling recess. Students should always dress appropriately for the weather. If parents are worried about conditions they always have the right to keep their child home.  See these tips from the National Weather Service for how to dress for cold weather.
