Press Release #11 – Delayed Teacher of the Year Awards set for Sept. 28

The four 2019 Teachers of the Year pose with officials from Dearborn Public Schools and the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce, with assistance from the Dearborn Public Schools, will present the delayed Teacher of the Year Awards on Monday, Sept. 28 at 4:30 p.m.

The virtual event will be broadcast live via the district’s YouTube channel, Facebook account and cable channels and on the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.  A recording will also be available later on the district’s YouTube channel.

The Dearborn Area Chamber will announce four Teachers of the Year, one each for preschool to second grade, third through fifth grade, middle school and high school.  The annual Alberta Muirhead Teacher of the Year Student Choice Awards were originally scheduled to be presented on April 23, but had to be postponed after the Governor issued stay-home orders cancelling large gatherings.  Last winter, hundreds of Dearborn Public School students at every grade level (sometimes with help from their parents) nominated teachers for one of the awards.

Teachers selected to receive a Teacher of the Year Award are recognized as positive role models who consistently provide unique, productive, positive classroom experiences.  Winning teachers receive a $1,000 cash prize and a glass award commemorating their achievement.  They also join a select group of Dearborn teachers who have been recognized by the community for their dedication and passion for teaching.  The event is presented with the help of local business sponsors, including presenting sponsor LaFontaine Automotive Group.

“We are glad to have such a great partnership with the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce to honor some of the many outstanding teachers in the district,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. “While the award presentation was delayed, it does not dilute the recognition for these four outstanding teachers.”

Jackie Lovejoy, President of the Dearborn Area Chamber commented: “We are delighted to finally recognize our winning educators!  With more than 1,500 nominations received annually, this is a team effort in collection and evaluation. The DACC Education Committee and I also know it’s a treat to read all the rave reviews the students share.  Congratulations to all our nominees!”
