Greetings,
We are very fortunate to work in a community that strongly supports the work we do in our schools. The passage of several bond and millage proposals, a steady 28 year increase in student enrollment, parents and community members actively involved in our schools, partnerships with city and local organizations, and a dedicated staff are all positive signs of the strong support for our District.
However, over the last several years we have also witnessed, on a broader more national scale, a trending attitude that isn’t always supportive of public education. The elimination of dollars targeted to help At Risk students, the portrayal of school employees as less than deserving of the salaries and benefits they receive, and the attitude that public education is a national failure are all signs of this effort to thwart the hard work of educators working in public schools.
On Thursday, January 19th we invite you to take part in an event to counter this negative perception of public education in our nation. Beginning at 9:45 a.m. parents, students, staff members, and community members will gather to show they are united in their support for public education. The event is part of a national day of action and will take place at the Administrative Service Center (Ten Eyck Building), 18700 Audette. Any member of the staff who is able to take 30 minutes of their time and would like to show their support is welcome to stop by.
This activity coincides with similar efforts taking place across the country on that day to show support for public education in the United States. Organizers also want to call attention to the fact schools must remain centers of learning that are protected against threats of bullying and racism. In addition, it is important that policymakers increase the investment in public schools and protect Title I funds.
The event at the Administration building will start when those gathered join hands and encircle the building symbolically demonstrating their unity in supporting public schools. A brief ceremony will follow with comments from parents, staff, and other community leaders.
