Press Release 18/Nov. 10, 2023
Parents, students and community members are invited to chat about Dearborn Public Schools with Superintendent Glenn Maleyko at any of a series of upcoming events starting Nov. 16.
The informal events are called Chatting with the Superintendent, and they provide a way for the public to hear updates and ask questions about what is happening in the district. In addition to Dr. Maleyko, several executive directors in the district will also hold similar events. At each of the events, a team of administrators will be available to help answer questions on a variety of topics.
Look for administrator chatting events to be posted on the calendar on the First Bell website and on individual school blogs. Chatting with the Superintendent events for the public are scheduled for:
- Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 at 5 p.m. at Lindbergh Elementary, 500 N. Waverly, Dearborn.
- Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024 at 5 p.m. at Nowlin Elementary, 2600 Penn St., Dearborn.
- Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024 at 4 p.m. at Dearborn High, 19501 Outer Dr., Dearborn.
- Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 5 p.m. at River Oaks Elementary, 20755 Ann Arbor Trail, Dearborn Heights.
- Monday, April 15, 2024 at 5 p.m. at Howard Elementary, 1611 N. York St., Dearborn.
- Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. at Lowrey School, 6601 Jonathon St., Dearborn.
The meetings are open to all community members, district staff, students and parents. Parents are welcome to attend any of the Chatting events, even if their child attends a different school.
By design, Chatting events are less formal than school board meetings, providing an opportunity for interactive conversations on a variety of school-related topics.
“I appreciate the opportunity to talk with our community and provide individuals with the big picture story of our district, to listen to their thoughts and comments, and hopefully to answer any questions they may have for me or our administrative team,” Dr. Maleyko said. “I have held Chatting events for most of my eight years as superintendent. We have discovered this relaxed setting encourages open dialog and leads to good conversations and the sharing of ideas.”
Conversations will be driven by those in attendance and could focus on topics related to individual schools or to the district as a whole. Parents who want to discuss particular students or staff members should arrange to meet privately with the school principal or child’s teacher.
Possible topics could be the need to renew the district’s operating millage; infrastructure needs including last year’s long-range building recommendations; and the impact of legislative changes over the last two years including changes to Read by Third Grade, teacher evaluations and more. Parents and community members can also bring their own questions or concerns to be discussed.
