Statement of sympathy on the passing of former Mayor O’Reilly

Mayor John "Jack" O'Reilly Jr.

Expression of sympathy on the passing of former Mayor John “Jack” O’Reilly from Dr. Glenn Maleyko, Superintendent, Dearborn Public Schools

On behalf of the Dearborn Board of Education and the entire Dearborn Public Schools staff, I want to express our most sincere condolences to the O’Reilly family on the passing of John, “Jack” O’Reilly.

The Mayor was an advocate for public education and strongly supported the work of the Dearborn Public Schools. He took a “hands on” approach in supporting our students by actively being involved in the PTA in our district. He was also a Board Member of the Dearborn Education Foundation. Mayor O’Reilly believed in their mission to support teachers and classrooms. This support continues as the family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Foundation.

Mayor O’Reilly left a positive legacy in the city. He helped to forge an important joint cooperation between the city and school district. On a personal note, I enjoyed working with him and our frequent conversations. I will always fondly remember when I had the privilege to travel to Washington D.C. in 2015 to present with the Mayor, then Police Chief Haddad, and Imam Mardini. We spoke to an International audience regarding the cooperation between the city, school district, and the police department.

Mayor O’Reilly was a dedicated public servant and lived his beliefs by serving the Dearborn community for three plus decades as member of the Dearborn City Council, City Council President, and Mayor of Dearborn. The former Mayor loved Dearborn, he worked tirelessly to build bridges and serve all residents. His work has benefited the entire Dearborn community.

On behalf of everyone in the Dearborn Public Schools our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this most difficult time.

Glenn Maleyko,

Superintendent
