Dearborn Public Schools is recognizing local police and fire departments as part of National First Responders Day on Oct. 28, 2023.
The district has long had a strong and positive relationship with the Dearborn Police Department. Six officers serve as School Resource Officers. These men and women regularly spend time in district schools, particularly the high schools, to get to know students and to work to keep issues from growing into more serious problems. Dearborn Police are also always willing to assist at large district events such as graduations.
“We wanted to use today to thank all of those in the Dearborn Police Department, especially our SROs for their support of our schools and students. I truly appreciate our close relationship with all of Dearborn’s first responders, and I look forward to working with Chief Issa Shahin to continue the district’s partnership with police,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko.
Dearborn Police have been paying extra attention to district schools in recent weeks. The current conflict in the Middle East has created heightened concerns that Dearborn residents could become the target of hate crimes. This concern is further fueled by some news outlets’ misleading coverage of recent high school student walkouts in support of Palestine. Chief Shahin, Dr. Maleyko and Danielle Elzayat, the district’s Health, Safety and Security Supervisor, met again last week to continue their long-standing discussion about safety and security in schools.
The district has a less formal relationship with the Dearborn Fire Department, but district officials still expressed gratitude for the fast and effective response when firefighters are called to our buildings. With about 23,000 people in district buildings on school days, medical calls occur fairly regularly. Paramedics and EMS are always quick to respond and provide the needed assistance.
“I am glad to take this opportunity to let all of our first responders in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights know how much they are appreciated and to thank them for all they do for our students, staff and community,” Superintendent Maleyko said.
Ms. Elzayat also offered her appreciation.
“A big shout out to all the incredible first responders who tirelessly support our schools! Your dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff is truly remarkable,” Ms. Elzayat said. “Whether it’s responding to emergencies, providing medical aid, or offering reassurance during challenging times, you play a vital role in creating a secure environment for learning and growth. Thank you for your unwavering service and for being there when we need you the most. Your bravery and selflessness are an inspiration to us all.”
