Press Release 18/Nov. 10, 2022
Does your child want to prepare for a career right out of high school? Earn an associate’s degree at no cost to your family? Take challenging academic classes and earn acceptance at a top-tier university?
All of those are possible with Dearborn Public Schools. The district is proud to offer students a wide assortment of high school options to let them create a path that is right for them. District eighth graders are learning more about high school options during presentations at their schools during November and December. Parents are invited to those meetings, too, but for those who cannot attend the morning school sessions, the district has scheduled two Zoom meetings in December. Parents and eighth grade students who may not yet be part of Dearborn Public Schools are also invited to attend and learn more about what the district offers.
The presentations will also be recorded and available later on the district’s YouTube channel.
The Zoom meetings are set for:
- Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. (Click Zoom link here)
- Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. (Click Zoom link here)
Students are encouraged to start planning now for next year’s classes.
Eighth grade students will need to commit in the early spring if they are interested in attending certain programs that run for all of high school. This would include applying for Henry Ford Early College programs that allow students to attend for five years and get both a high school diploma and associate degree or vocational certification at no cost to the family. Henry Ford Early College allows students to specialize in medical or education careers, and Henry Ford Early College Advanced Manufacturing focuses on certain trades and technical fields. The Early College programs are also open to students who live in Wayne County, but not in the Dearborn Public School District.
Some academically advanced eighth grade students in the district will be invited to attend the Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology. Students in that program spend half their school day at the Dearborn Heights Campus attending advanced classes and half at their home high school.
For students already in high school, additional secondary options sessions are held during 9th grade. Those students should reach out to their counselors regarding options that include trade and other vocational programs, Advanced Placement classes, free dual enrollment in college classes, and the Henry Ford Collegiate Academy. Like the Early College, the Collegiate Academy allows students to attend for five years to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree. The Collegiate Academy and Early College programs are provided through a partnership between the district and Henry Ford College.
Parents can find an overview of the district’s high school options on the district website under Programs.
“We know that allowing our students to explore careers, find their passion, and to prepare for life after graduation also makes them more successful in high school,” said Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. “We hope parents and students will take advantage of these secondary options sessions to learn more about what we offer and to start developing a plan that works for their child.”
