Dearborn Public Schools recognized as among the Best and Brightest in Wellness

Dearborn Public Schools is being recognized for the second year in a row as among the state’s Best and Brightest in Wellness.

The district received the award for its work to promote healthy lifestyles among employees through programs run by the Dearborn Schools Employee Healthcare Program (DSEHP) Wellness Committee. Activities listed in the award application include an employee health fair, sleep seminars, stress management series, weight loss competition, and the Ready – Set- Move challenge to get employees to log their physical activities.

“The award recognizes that we strive to be a healthy district, and we are really promoting all around wellness for our employees,” said Chris Sipperley, DSEHP Wellness Committee secretary and president of the Dearborn Federation of Teachers. “We are helping the whole person so we can better serve the students.”

Dearborn Public Schools and other winners will be recognized at the Best and Brightest in Wellness Symposium and Awards Gala on Oct. 5 at The Henry in Dearborn.

According to the award announcement from Best and Brightest, “As one of this year’s winners, you are doing your part to reflect and amplify the program’s mission and guiding principles: Better Business. Richer Lives. Stronger Communities.”

Across the state, more than 100 institutions were recognized including businesses, non-profits, public institutions and more. Dearborn Public Schools was one of 10 honorees in the schools category.

The Wellness Committee is chaired by Sean Jones. Other members of the volunteer committee are Dana Addis, Kathleen McCormick, Jane Mazza, Kathryn Straith Johnson, Maymon Mustafa, Al Lerini, and Kim Nicholson.

Now in its fifth year, the program has expanded to more than 10 events a year.

“But more importantly, the group still has the desire to learn, grow and reach additional employees with a message of wellness in the areas of social/emotional, career, health, financial and community,” Sipperley said.
