Student Peace March on MLK jr. Day to promote a Peaceful message in the United States and Abroad

The student peace march on January 18 was outstanding. I am so proud of the student leaders that coordinated this event and there was a great showing despite the extremely cold weather. The students that spoke at the event were very articulate and they included Omar from Fordson, Gus and Jacob from Edsel Ford, Claudio from Divine Child, and Sultan from Fordson. Sultan mentioned the following quote during his speech.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

These students sent a strong message during the peace march regarding how to take a positive outlook and how to make a meaningful difference in our community, state, and country.

In attendance at the event were Trustees Lane, Bazzi, Hammoud, Petlichkoff and Meade(Trustees McDonald and Guido were also very supportive). In addition, Congresswoman Dingell, Representative George Darany, Commissioner Woronchak, and other dignitaries were in attendance. I want to thank the Mayor who spoke at the event along with Chief Haddad and the city for their awesome support with the peace march. I also want to thank Ms. Gass, Ms. Herrick, Ms. Harb, Ms. Charles, Mr. Mustonen, and Dr. Souweidane who supported the students with this great event. In addition,  thank you to the administrators, teachers, parents, and especially the students who attended this event.

This was all about the students and again, I am so proud of them. I really look forward to my next Student Advisory Committee meeting later this week so that we can debrief regarding the march and next steps.

Since it was so cold you will notice that I put on several layers of clothing including Edsel Ford, Dearborn High and Fordson clothing.  It was also great to take a picture with Donovan Golich a former Salina student of mine from many years ago who is now completing his student teaching at Dearborn High. I was his assistant principal and his sister’s 5th grade teacher.
